Martha Stewart responds to social media users who called her living room ‘old and stuffy’

Martha Stewart has responded to online critics who expressed how unimpressed they were with her interior design skills.

Stewart recently took to Instagram to show off her living rooms.

“It was a big day to refurnish the three main lounges in Skylands. We replaced the lounge upholstery from blue-gray fabrics to creamy pale butter yellow fabrics (all the yellow is from Lily Pond Lane that I sold two years ago!),” her caption began.

“The library is now much more comfortable and the faux wood table is now the game table. I love the rustic and elegant charm of this lovely 1925 home.”

At the time, some commentators were pleased with the outcome of the upgrade.

“A lily pad. I’ve always loved both houses,” one commenter wrote, while another chimed in: “It’s so beautiful! Just perfect!”

However, others have wondered where exactly his inspiration came from.

“Looks old and stuffy,” wrote one commenter.

Another commenter agreed, writing: “Yuck. Looks like the living room of a 1987 Marriott suite.”

“This is not your best work,” a third commenter pointed out. “You seem empty, like you have no empty soul.”

The negative comments prompted Stewart to share another Instagram post using another photo of the renovated living room with a caption responding to the criticism.

“I rarely read every comment that comes in after I post, but since I was so happy with the transformation of my Maine living room, I scrolled through many of the comments and was surprised at the harsh judgment displayed by so many!!!” the caption began.

She noted how much time had been spent redoing the room and finding furniture that suited it perfectly.

“My assistants from Maine and I spent three hours moving the old furniture and installing the new ones. We were pleased to see that the pieces fit perfectly in the room and were proportionate to the size of the space. This was not a professional “decorator” installation, but a quick and efficient attempt at a change,” she explained.

The lifestyle guru also added that she’s not done decorating either. “Making a house a home or a room a beautiful living space takes way more than three hours. Of course, there will be color, plants, mirrors, a new rug or two, and other art and objects. Stay tuned!!!!” she wrote.

“And by the way, the birds are chromolithographs by Carroll Tyson known as the ‘6Audubon of Maine’ – so beautiful!”

Fans then encouraged her to ignore the negative comments and told her that she doesn’t need to justify why she does what she does to others.

“I have toured this home. It is a national treasure. Beautiful, classic and historic. Martha has done everything she can to restore and preserve its elegance and history. If you don’t know and don’t have a true perspective, then keep your comments to yourself. As my grandmother used to say, if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all,” one commenter noted.

Another commenter agreed, writing, “After decades of inspiring millions of people in interior design, cooking, and entertaining, you owe the negative commenters nothing! If you’re happy with it, that’s all that matters. Keep being the queen you are!”
