Porsche prematurely stops production of some combustion models

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Porsche is sticking to its policy of transitioning to electric vehicles, bringing forward the end of production of some internal combustion models, the carmaker’s production chief told Automobilwoche magazine.

Porsche board member Albrecht Reimold has said that the petrol version of the Macan SUV for non-European markets will not go into production until 2026, earlier than originally planned.

“The platform has reached the end of its cycle,” Reimold said.

After production ceases, the company would focus on electric versions of the Macan to advance Porsche’s sustainability agenda, even though demand for electric vehicles has declined, Reimold said.

“I don’t let the success (of the electric Macan) be defined by a single number,” the executive reportedly said.

Combustion-engine versions of the Boxster and Cayman sports cars, a model range known as the 718, will no longer be produced from next year and the company is already focusing on electric versions that will be launched next year, Reimold added.

Production of the petrol versions of the 718 and Macan for European markets has already been stopped.
