Jennifer Siebel Newsom, now 50, met Gavin Newsom on a blind date in 2006, according to Business Insider. “We had so much in common that we were blown away,” she told the San Francisco Chronicle a year later.

However, while they had a lot in common, their preferred political party wasn’t always one of them. According to SFGate, Jennifer was once a Republican (and her father is still openly right-wing), while Gavin has always been a Democrat but, oddly enough, was previously married to Kimberly Guilfoyle. Yes, that Kimberly Guilfoyle – The One currently engaged to Donald Trump Jr.

Born in San Francisco, Siebel Newsom graduated from Stanford before moving to Hollywood to pursue acting. Her IMDB page boasts an impressive 42 acting credits, including appearances on series such as Life And Mad Men.

But it was her work as a documentary filmmaker that defined her. In 2011, she screened Miss Representation at Sundance, which The Hollywood Reporter praised for its examination of “the insidious role of visual media in the unbalanced representation of women and girls.” She has since produced powerful films The mask you live in (2015) and The Great American Lie (2020), among others.

She experienced a tragedy in her childhood

At age six, Siebel Newsom was playing golf in a cart during a family vacation in Hawaii when it accidentally backed up, killing her older sister. She told the LA Times that the incident left her with an unconscious need to excel in life. “I felt the pressure to be perfect. To make my parents forget, by being two girls instead of one,” she told the newspaper.

Newsom was also a key witness in the case. Prosecution against Harvey Weinstein, She claimed the movie mogul sexually assaulted her in 2005. “What he did to me was the worst. His assault was excruciatingly traumatic,” she said in a video posted to Instagram last year.

She is a champion for women

Siebel Newsom has long been an advocate for gender equality, as evidenced in her documentaries, but she has become even more vocal on the issue since becoming California’s first partner. When asked by Fox40 News if she ever thinks about her husband’s work before speaking out, she replied, “I will always advocate for women and I will always put women’s lived experiences at the center of my concerns…because we live in a capitalist society where money and power are not in the hands of women.”

After marrying in 2008, they had four children: Montana, Hunter, Brooklynn and Dutch. After Dutch took the stage at Newsom’s inauguration as governor, he was dubbed “Governor Dad” and Jennifer was asked why she let her son walk the stage. Furious at the disparate responses, she wrote an op-ed for Glamour magazine titled “It’s Time to Stop Thinking of Parenting as a Burden for Moms and an Adorable Pastime for Dads.”

Asked eight months ago by Fox whether she would one day want to become first lady of the United States, she cited Jill BidenMichelle Obama and Hillary Clinton are examples of what is possible “when you give a truly strong, intelligent, powerful woman the freedom to be herself.”

“It’s exciting to see the partnership… between two individuals who bring something unique and different and demonstrate to the world… the value of women alongside men who have a voice and a platform where they can help people,” she added.

It seems that if given the opportunity, Siebel Newsom would not just accept being first lady, but actually take advantage of it.
