Local man charged with impaired driving, resisting arrest during traffic stop in Knox Township

CANTON OF KNOX (EYT) — Police say a local man resisted arrest during a traffic stop for drunken driving in Knox Township.

Court records indicate that Marienville-based state police have filed criminal charges against a 27-year-old man. Connor Lee Byerof Cranberry Township, Butler County, in the office of District Judge Timothy Schill on Friday, July 5.

According to a criminal complaint, Marienville PSP Trooper Dylan Cyphert conducted a traffic stop on a gray Nissan Rogue around 8:51 a.m. Thursday, July 4, on Farmington Township Line Road in Knox Township, Clarion County, for a speeding violation.

Trooper Cyphert made contact with the driver, who was identified as Conner Lee ByerA strong odor of alcohol emanated from Byer’s person and from inside the vehicle, the complaint states.

Byer’s pupils were extremely dilated, consistent with alcohol consumption, the complaint notes.

Byer told police he had two beers and it was noted that several empty Fizzy Sparkling Liquor containers were observed in the back seat of the vehicle, the complaint states.

Standardized field sobriety tests were conducted and indicators of impairment were observed, the complaint continues.

During his arrest for drunken driving, Byer resisted being handcuffed and had to be helped to the ground by two officers, according to the complaint.

He was eventually handcuffed and placed in a patrol vehicle. He was then transported to Clarion Hospital and consented to a legal blood draw, according to the complaint.

Byer was arraigned on Friday, July 5 at 12:30 a.m. before Judge Schill on the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol (blood alcohol content) at 0.16% or more, a class 3 felony
  • Resisting Arrest/Other Law Enforcement, Misdemeanor 2
  • Alcoholic Beverage Restrictions, Summary (Nine Counts)
  • Reckless driving summary
  • Exceeding the Estb maximum speed limit of 19 MPH, summary
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous driving, summary

He is currently free after posting $3,500 bail through a private surety.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 at 9 a.m., presided over by Judge Schill.
