(FOX NEWS) — President Biden is urging congressional Democrats to stop arguing about whether he should end his reelection bid and “move forward as a unified party” to defeat former President Trump in their 2024 rematch.

In a letter sent Monday to congressional Democrats as they returned from the July 4 recess, the president reiterated that he was “firmly committed to staying in the race” and said any further challenges to his candidacy “would only help Trump and hurt us.”

After his extremely brutal debate performance a week and a half ago in his first face-off with Trump, the president is trying to prove that he still has the stamina and insight to take on the toughest, most demanding job in the world. And he is trying to prove that he has the strength of character to defeat Trump.

The debate was a major setback for Biden, who at 81 is the oldest president in the nation’s history. His halting speech and faltering responses during the Atlanta showdown sparked widespread panic within the Democratic Party and a growing wave of public and private calls within his own party for him to step aside as the standard-bearer for 2024.
