Tropical Storm Beryl Causes Flight Delays, Cancellations in North Texas

Hurricane Beryl, which hit Texas as a Category 1 storm early Monday, was downgraded to a tropical storm later in the morning, but severe weather is still expected to move through the state and impact travel in more than just South Texas.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston, torrential rain, strong winds and isolated tornadoes could occur as the system moves further inland.

North Texas airports experienced higher than normal delays and cancellations as Beryl moved through the state.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded more than 60 cancellations Monday, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. Arriving flights were delayed an average of 46 minutes at their originating airport.

Cynthia Vega, DFW’s media relations manager said in an email that operations were running normally, but there were some flight delays due to weather.

Dallas Love Field Airport also experienced cancellations and delays Monday.

Lauren Rounds, manager of external communications and marketing for Dallas Love Field Airport, said in an email that flights heading south to Houston or the surrounding area were being affected by delays, cancellations and diversions.

However, greater impacts are expected on travel outside of Houston — and even outside the state.

According to Rounds, eastbound air traffic, such as to Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana, could also be affected. She added that the severity of the situation depends on whether individual flights are in wind paths, which are continually changing due to Beryl’s unpredictability.
