Three charged after drug-related death of Liam Payne

Three charged after drug-related death of Liam Payne

The toxicology report, shared with his family, indicated Payne had used drugs and alcohol for at least 72 hours before his death.

Argentine prosecutors revealed Thursday that Liam Payne used cocaine, alcohol and a prescription antidepressant before his death.

The former One Direction singer died last month after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

Authorities announced that three people have been charged with supplying drugs to Payne. One person is also facing charges for leaving him in a vulnerable state.

The toxicology report, shared with his family, indicated Payne had used drugs and alcohol for at least 72 hours before his death.

Payne, 31, fell from the third floor of the CasaSur Hotel on October 16.

He suffered multiple traumas and internal and external bleeding. An autopsy confirmed these injuries were consistent with a fall, and prosecutors ruled out self-harm or outside involvement in his death.

They reported that Payne may not have been fully conscious when he fell. Hotel staff had previously called emergency services and reported a guest who was “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol” and damaged his room.

A hotel employee is also involved in the case. Two others are accused of supplying him with cocaine, including one person who had regularly accompanied Payne during his stay.

Payne’s death is a wake-up call for the music industry’s role in mental health care

Payne’s death has sparked conversations about the mental health responsibilities of the music industry, especially for young stars.

Originally from Wolverhampton, England, Payne spoke publicly about his battle with substance abuse and the pressures of early fame.

He auditioned for the first time The X factor at age 14 and later at age 16. He found success when the show formed One Direction with him and fellow members Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.

The band sold more than 70 million albums and performed to millions of people worldwide before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

In the years that followed, Payne enjoyed moderate solo success but struggled to maintain his career momentum.

Payne is survived by a seven-year-old boy, Bear, with Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy.
