Verdi announces the arrival of Newman to its coaching staff

PITTSBURGH – The head coach Tory Verdi announced the addition of an assistant coach Devan Newman to the Pitt women’s basketball coaching staff Monday night.

Newman brings more than 15 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, highlighted by a four-year stint at Louisville where she held various positions.

“We are excited to welcome Devan Newman to our staff,” Verdi said. “She brings a wealth of knowledge to our program. Her expertise on both ends of the floor, as well as her ability to develop players, will help us immediately. She brings more than 15 years of Division I experience, including stints at Binghamton, Weber State and Louisville. As a program, we are eager to get started this upcoming season.”

Newman arrives from Binghamton where she served as associate head coach since 2021 and previously as an assistant coach from 2018 to 2021.

During the 2019-20 campaign, Newman helped the Bearcats to the best start (9-0) and most wins in school history. Additionally, in each of her six seasons, she helped produce multiple conference honorees.

“It is with great excitement and deep gratitude that I join Coach Verdi and the Pitt women’s basketball family,” Newman said. “From my first conversation with Coach Verdi, to spending time with the staff and players on campus, I felt the renewed energy, hunger and collaborative spirit surrounding the program and knew I wanted to be a part of it. I hope my versatility, work ethic and passion for the game will be an asset to the future success of Pitt women’s basketball. I look forward to building relationships with our incredible young women and helping them achieve their highest level of excellence on the court, in the classroom and in life.”

Prior to his time at Binghamton, Newman served as an assistant coach at Weber State from 2011-18. Notably, during the 2015-16 season, the Wildcats won a school-record 23 games and reached the championship game of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).

Newman began her career as a graduate assistant at Louisville, before being promoted to assistant director of operations/special assistant to the head coach. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sports administration from Oregon in 2007, before earning her master’s degree in sports administration from Louisville in 2009.
