Google Meet is getting a new Studio Sound setting on Android

  • Google Meet on Android gets AI-based audio enhancement called Studio Sound.

  • Studio Sound filters out background noise and recreates higher audio frequencies, replacing the existing noise cancellation feature.

  • Studio Sound is expected to improve noise cancellation while maintaining voice authenticity and should be available soon.

Google Meet gets AI-based audio enhancement on Android. Google app tinkerer AssembleDebug shared a screenshot of a new setting in the Google Meet app for Android called Studio Sound that will apparently use AI to improve audio quality. We don’t know much more about the feature and it’s not rolling out yet, but it looks like it should happen soon.

The description of Studio Sound in Google Meet settings states the feature “Filters out background noise and improves audio quality.” AssembleDebug says Studio Sound will replace the existing noise cancellation setting, and elaborates on how it improves audio quality. When Studio Sound is active, it will apparently use AI to “emulate higher audio frequencies.” Noise cancellation generally has problems with higher frequency sounds, so it seems like Studio Sound could use AI to imitate your voice in cases where high frequency noise that normal ANC can’t handle makes it difficult to hear you on the other side of the screen. line to hear your call.

A feature like this would ideally only be in effect for a fraction of a second at a time, so you don’t have to worry about Meet’s AI running wild and saying entire sentences in a voice that sounds like yours. In fact, Studio Sound will likely make Meet’s already impressive noise-cancelling sound even more effective. That said, we don’t have much to do here.

Studio Sound should come to Android soon

Google has coined the term “studio sound.” supporting documentation to describe the noise cancellation functionality of the Meet desktop interface since at least early 2024, but this setting in the Meet app on Android marks the first time the name has been used in the Meet user interface. Studio Sound is apparently coming to both Google Meet and the Meet tab of the Gmail app.

AssembleDebug doesn’t share a timeline for when we can expect this feature, saying only that it has “not been rolled out yet.” Still, it seems like it has surfaced this way that it will be available in the near future.
