Kenosha, Wisconsin police say a possible shooting has been thwarted after a teen shows up at the elementary school with a black duffel bag and backpack

KENOSHA, Wis.– A 13-year-old boy is under investigation after he went to his former elementary school in Kenosha, Wisconsin with a black bag and backpack that appears to have been a threat.

This is a situation where the police say the emergency solutions have worked. Authorities said they were able to prevent a possible shooting that could have happened inside the elementary school.

According to police, the teenage suspect tried to enter through multiple doors, but was eventually mistaken for a student and buzzed in.

Neighbors near Roosevelt Elementary said they heard sirens blaring down the block Thursday morning.

“All of a sudden a SWAT truck pulled up,” said Jabbar, a witness to the arrest.

By then, parents had already gathered outside, desperate to find their children inside.

Police said they arrested a 13-year-old former student inside with a backpack and a black duffel bag. He has not yet been charged with a crime and is a juvenile, so his face is blurred.

Investigators also discovered a video that they said shows the boy holding a gun, although they did not say when the video was taken.

“This video should not have been seen by us today. This should have been reported to us sooner,” said Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton.

Police said his online history is also alarming. By mid-afternoon, the police had found a suspect who they said should never have gotten so close to young children.

“We know there was an internet search, and all the red flags that we would look for and expect someone to report were there,” Patton said. “We narrowly missed a tragedy today.”

Police said the internet searches the suspect allegedly conducted were related to school shootings. They also say the teen shared threatening videos and comments for weeks leading up to today’s incident.
