WC students caught with cell phones and calculators

As the 2024 exams reach their midpoint, the Western Cape Education Department has expressed satisfaction with progress and reported that the exams are proceeding smoothly without any significant disruptions. Cape {city} etc reports.

As of October 21, the exams have received significant public support. Officials have thanked the community and encouraged everyone in the province to continue supporting students through the remainder of their exams.

Although no cases of exam paper leaks have been reported, students are reminded to remain vigilant and report any information they receive regarding possible leaks. Ensuring the integrity of the exams is of the utmost importance, and students play a crucial role in maintaining that standard.

However, invigilators reported nine cases of students bringing prohibited items, such as cell phones or crib notes, to exam locations.

These items are strictly prohibited and students are advised to check their pockets thoroughly before entering the examination hall. ‘Forgetting’ to delete these items is not considered an acceptable excuse.

Before the examinations, all matric candidates signed an undertaking agreement, co-signed by a parent or guardian, which set out the examination rules and the consequences of misconduct.

This agreement reinforces that students and their families understand the regulations and the severity of violations.

As students prepare for the final stretch, the department also recognizes the pressures of the exam period and encourages those struggling with anxiety to seek support. Students are invited to contact teachers or contact the Safe Schools Call Center on 0800 45 46 47 for assistance.

“We are so proud of how hard our matrics have worked,” a department spokesperson said. ‘We wish them all the best for the remaining exams and look forward to celebrating their results in January.’
