Man arrested for raping 16-year-old relative in Namakkal

A 28-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl, who became pregnant and subsequently gave birth to a child at Pallipalayam in Namakkal on Thursday (November 7, 2024).

Four months ago, the girl had joined a government school in Pallipalayam. When she fell ill in class on Thursday afternoon, her teachers took her to Palliapalayam Primary Health Center where doctors discovered that she was pregnant and had gone to full term. Minutes later she gave birth to a female child.

The teachers alerted her parents and the police. Personnel of the Rasipuram All Women’s Police inquired into the incident and found that the girl’s relative had allegedly raped her and made her pregnant months ago. Her parents were unaware of the incident, police said.

The police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and arrested the relative on Friday and remanded him to judicial custody. Further research is being conducted.
