Son of injured cross guard speaks about mother’s condition and road to recovery

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAF) – Jimmy Perdue is cherishing the support his family has received over the past week.

“I can’t even express it, you get so overwhelmed,” he said. “I mean, I get goosebumps just thinking about the support and love that everyone is getting.”

Last Friday morning, his mother Terri Perdue was hit by a car while she was working as a crossing guard for West Madison Pre-K.

Since then, she has been in hospital in critical condition and dealing with several serious injuries.

“She has had a long road to recovery, she has a fractured pelvis that is broken in three places, she has had a brain haemorrhage – that brain haemorrhage stopped quite early, we still don’t know exactly to what extent that will persist. ” not yet,” he said. “She had a broken left shoulder that eventually had to be replaced. And she had a broken arm, which ended up requiring some hardware to be put in as well.”

In the week since, Jimmy said he has seen an outpouring of support from the community.

His colleague has led the way with a donation fund that has already surpassed $13,000.

Jimmy said there was a lot of uncertainty early on, which left him worried about what might happen next.

But he said the support he has received from the Madison community has been instrumental in helping him get through what may have been the worst week of his life.

“Knowing that so many people love her and she was uplifting during this time, and it was very quickly that everyone came together and wanted to help with this whole ordeal. You don’t normally see that,” he says. “It was truly a blessing and I told people, ‘Leave it to God to use my mother to bring the city together in this way.'”

Meanwhile, Madison police confirm that the driver who struck Perdue remained at the scene after the incident, but no charges have been filed at this time.
