Princess Cruises cancels third sailing due to persistent power problems

Despite reassuring guests just days ago that their cruise could go ahead as planned, Princess Cruises has now announced the cancellation of the November 10, 2024 sailing to Royal princess.

The sailing would be a seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary, with departure Galveston, Texas and a visit to Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan. Royal princess is currently homeported from the Lone Star State and offers sailings to the Western Caribbean ranging from 6 to 11 nights.

“Princess Cruises has unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to cancel the Regal Princess sailing from Galveston on November 10, following the cancellations of the October 27 and November 3 sailings,” Princess Cruises said this in a statement to Cruise Hive.

The new cancellation was unexpected and due to a second problem that occurred on the ship.

“Our team has been working to resolve a major technical issue with one of the power generators, which has now been successfully repaired,” the statement explained. “While the ship was preparing for the next sailing, a second generator experienced a technical fault. This new and unforeseen development means that additional time out of service is required to ensure the ship is fully operational and safe.”

It is unclear whether the failure of two different power generators is related or simply coincidental. The technical team will no doubt fully investigate the issue and ensure that all repairs have been completed and the vessel is certified to sail again.

Royal princess first had problems on her transatlantic cruise from Southampton, UK when she moved to Texas. A A small fire was reported in the engine room during that sailing, followed by some relatively minor power outages later in the cruise.

To solve the problems is the ship The departures on October 27 and November 3 were cancelled at the last minute, to the dismay and frustration of the passengers.

This latest cancellation is sure to be just as disappointing for travelers who would have certainly been looking forward to their sea getaway, especially after earlier reassurances that the trip would go ahead as planned.

“Repairs to Regal Princess are proceeding as planned in preparation for her scheduled departure from Galveston on November 10,” the cruise line said last week. “Our team remains focused on ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience, and we look forward to welcoming guests on board.”

The Royal class from 142-229 gross tons Royal princess can welcome 3,560 guests per sailing. Also on board are approximately 1,300 international crew members who work hard to ensure everyone has a great holiday.

Compensation offered

All guests on the now canceled cruise will receive a full refund of 100% of their cruise fare and any prepaid onboard purchases, as is customary when a sailing must be canceled.

Additionally, Princess Cruises is offering 50% future cruise credit on every future sailing as a “gesture of goodwill” for the inconvenience of the last-minute cancellation.

Cruise lines never hope to cancel sailings, but it is occasionally necessary depending on the nature of a ship’s technical problems and how long repairs may take. Sometimes cruises can be shortened rather than canceled, but if the next cruise is a shorter voyage or repairs may take several days, cancellation may be the desired outcome.
