Stop & Shop is closing 32 underperforming grocery stores in the northeastern United States as part of the company’s efforts to improve its financial performance.

Consumers are also facing rising prices at grocery stores, with food prices rising slightly last month, according to the latest inflation report.

“Stop & Shop evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy foundation for the future growth of our brand,” the chain’s president, Gordon Reid, said in a statement.

Ahold Delhaize, the chain’s Dutch parent company, unveiled the new stores Friday, adding that they would close by early November. The closures come amid a broader shakeup of the U.S. grocery industry, including the rise of discount grocery brand Aldi, which plans to open 800 stores. In addition, Kroger and Albertson announced a $25 billion merger earlier this year. The Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit to block the deal.

Ahold Delhaize announced at its investor day in May that store reductions were planned, but did not specify the locations. The stores affected are spread across the five states where the group operates, including 10 in New Jersey, eight in Massachusetts, seven in New York, five in Connecticut and two in Rhode Island.

Stop & Shop said it “remains committed to serving our communities through additional stores, online shopping and home delivery services.” Employees affected by the closures will be offered other opportunities within the company.

After the closures, the 110-year-old chain said it would “continue to have a strong presence across its five states with more than 350 stores.” Stop & Shop has renovated about half of its stores since 2018, with renovated stores “outperforming” those that were not renovated.

In addition to operating Stop & Shop, Ahold Delhaize owns Food Lion and Giant grocery stores in the United States.
