Manchester United eye surprise return for loaned midfielder

Manchester United transfer rumours intensify

Manchester United’s transfer window is abuzz with activity following the imminent signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. New sporting director Dan Ashworth is reportedly considering another surprising addition to the midfield: a potential return for Sofyan Amrabat.

Amrabat’s previous stint at Old Trafford

Morocco international Amrabat joined United on loan last season. Despite initial excitement over his arrival, his performances failed to live up to expectations. Over the course of the season, he made 30 appearances in all competitions, 15 of which came as a starter.

As part of his loan deal, Manchester United have the option to sign Amrabat permanently for £21.4m, having already spent £8.5m on the loan. His parent club Fiorentina have set a deadline of July 21 for United to make a decision. It is understood that Ashworth has decided not to trigger the purchase option.

Considering another loan?

Interestingly, reports from Italy suggest that Ashworth is exploring the possibility of bringing Amrabat back on another season-long loan. Amrabat extended his contract with Fiorentina until 2026 before joining United, which could facilitate another loan deal. According to Radio Bruno, this contractual security could prompt Fiorentina to negotiate another temporary transfer.

Amrabat is reportedly interested in a return to Old Trafford, where he is “dreaming” of a new opportunity. Despite his aspirations, it remains unlikely that United will follow that path again. His struggles to adapt to the Premier League, coupled with the availability of better midfield options, make that option less appealing.

Midfield overhaul underway

In the meantime, Ashworth’s main task is to offload unwanted players to streamline the squad. Casemiro is at the top of that list, having struggled last season. The Brazilian midfielder, who earns £300,000 a week, has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe eager to facilitate his exit.

Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay are also on the list of potential departures. Amidst this speculation, it seems that only Kobbie Mainoo, the talented youngster, has a secure future at Old Trafford.

The potential departures of these midfielders require replacements, making Amrabat’s re-signing feel more like a step backwards than a step forward.

New direction for United midfield

As Manchester United continue to reshape their squad, the focus will be on recruiting midfielders who can make an immediate impact. While Amrabat’s return may be a sentimental choice, practical considerations dictate a different approach. The club must ensure their midfield is equipped with players who can meet the high demands of the Premier League.
