‘Bismack’ Director Shares What Inspired the Movie About OKC Thunder Player

A documentary about Oklahoma City Thunder center Bismack Biyombo premiered at this year’s DeadCenter Film Festival.

The film’s director, Michael Zubach, joined News 9 at 9 to talk more about the film.

He said he was inspired by Biyombo’s determination to follow his dream of playing in the NBA and giving back to his country.

“His story is about how he changed his country and what he gave back, but more than anything, it’s about his family and the bond he has with his father,” Zubach said.

Zubach said Biyombo’s story resonated with him because when he was drafted by the NBA, he used the money he earned to create a foundation that would benefit his country.

“He started creating programs to help kids get scholarships to come to the United States,” Zubach said.

He said Biyombo realised he could not get everyone out of the country, so he wanted to give them a reason to stay.

“His foundation sat down and said, ‘Let’s start building hospitals, schools, basketball courts to give them the resources they need to succeed in life in Congo,’” Zubach said.

The film will air on News 9 at 6:30 pm on July 13, 2024.

Zubach said he was excited for the world to learn more about Biyombo off the field.

“He’s so selfless, so humble, he appreciates life, and what we want viewers to know about this movie, about him, is that if you have a microphone for a change, use it,” Zubach said.
