Neighbors shocked by fatal stabbing in Mira Mesa neighborhood

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An early morning stabbing left some Mira Mesa neighbors feeling uneasy.

Neighbors told ABC 10News the neighborhood is usually quiet and peaceful. But early Friday morning, neighbors woke up to yellow crime scene tape and police cars outside a home on Mont Blanc Drive.

“It’s a great neighborhood, and it’s really surprising that this is happening,” said Holly Lyons, who lives in the neighborhood.

Lyons was out on her usual morning jog when she saw the scene outside the house. The situation in the normally quiet neighborhood has raised more questions than answers.

“We were running that way all the time,” Lyons said. “There were police cars, but there was no commotion and it wasn’t chaotic. So I was hoping it wasn’t anything terrible.”

A 40-year-old man died at the hospital after being stabbed inside his home, according to San Diego police. The woman arrested by police was in a relationship with the victim and drove him to the hospital. Although an argument may have led to the stabbing, the exact events that occurred remain unclear.

However, the reality of the situation remains shocking for members of the community.

“It’s quite shocking because everyone is so nice,” says Frances, a local mother who goes out every day with her family.

Frances tells us she heard about it through neighbors in the community, but couldn’t believe it.

“When I saw the police report and the police cars going by, I thought, ‘Wow,’” Frances says. “It’s actually a lot scarier than I originally thought.”

But community members say it was an unusual incident that has upset some residents in the area.

“It’s a really great, family-friendly, safe neighborhood, what we consider a super safe neighborhood,” Frances said. “The kids all play together every afternoon. So it’s really, really sad and really shocking.”

But Frances adds that it is a tight-knit community, determined to move forward together.

“It was very sad and shocking to hear one of our neighbours so close to us say that this could happen,” Frances said. “Everyone is so supportive of each other and we will get through this.”

Those who knew the victim but did not want to be filmed told ABC 10News he had just celebrated his 40th birthday.

The case is still ongoing.
