Video shows Lauren Boebert apologizing to police after speeding stop

A video recently released by a local Denver news station shows Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, apologizing to state police after being pulled over for speeding.

According to Denver publication Westword, Bobert was pulled over on May 12 while driving 85 mph in a 65 mph zone by Colorado State Police. The congresswoman was arrested on Mother’s Day morning while driving a black Mazda CX-50 on Interstate 70.

On a recent broadcast, FOX31 Denver aired body camera footage from the state trooper who pulled Boebert over and gave him a speeding ticket.

“I played with my gears and I know I ended up going way too fast,” Boebert told the officer in the video.

The officer then responded, “Because you hit 90 (miles per hour) for a second, but you braked pretty quickly.”

After showing the clip of Boebert’s traffic stop, the FOX31 Denver anchor who reported the video said Boebert told the officer she was having “some trouble with her transmission, which is why she didn’t realize she was speeding.”

Bobert was issued a $174.50 speeding ticket, but because she failed to pay it on time, she was ordered to appear in Eagle County District Court on July 26, Westword reported. On July 3, the deputy contacted the court and paid the fine online, the newspaper reported, citing the court clerk’s office.

Newsweek reached out to Boebert’s office via email for comment.

“Any fines that are not paid to the state within the 20-day period will be sent to the court,” a court clerk told Westword, adding that Boebert eventually accepted a standard plea offer.

Boebert’s press secretary, Drew Sexton, told the outlet that the MP sent a check for the speeding ticket to the Department of Revenue (DOR) instead of paying it online, but the check was later returned to her.

However, the employee who spoke to Boebert on the phone earlier this month said she did not mention a lost check. The employee told Westword that they did not “know what happened until the ticket came to us.”

Boebert is relatively new to Congress, having been elected in 2020. She currently represents Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, but is the Republican nominee for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District in this year’s election. Boebert’s short tenure in Congress, however, has been fraught with controversy.

In September 2023, Boebert made headlines after she was ejected from the Buell Theater in Denver during a performance of Beetlejuice the musicalThe MP was caught on CCTV vaping and publicly displaying affection for her partner during the show.

After the incident, Boebert called the situation “unacceptable” and said she had violated her values by attending the show. She apologized for the “unwanted attention” her actions brought to the community, saying, “While none of my actions or words as a private citizen that night were intentional or intended to cause harm, the reality is that they were, and I regret that.”
