Rust prosecutor makes shocking claims about Alec Baldwin’s ‘reckless’ behavior on set after lawyer resigns before charges are dropped

A former “Rust” prosecutor who resigned before Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter case was dismissed has spoken out about her decision and the actor’s “reckless” behavior on set.

Erlinda Ocampo Johnson, who resigned just before the charges were dropped, claims to have seen evidence showing Baldwin engaging in “rough play” with the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

According to Johnson, Baldwin allegedly used another person as a target for his blank shots during these alleged fights.

She stressed the seriousness of such actions, telling NewsNation: “You don’t do that with real guns.”

Johnson insists her resignation was not dramatic. Rather, it was motivated by a sense of moral obligation she felt in light of the new evidence she had uncovered.

“I left because I learned about this evidence when it became public knowledge late yesterday afternoon.”

This evidence, hidden from the defense according to the judge, would include ammunition given to the police by a member of the crew.

“I came on the case towards the end of April, so I had to get up to speed. I was not involved in the Hannah Gutierrez case at all. So I had no idea that this individual had brought this ammunition to the sheriff’s office and provided it to the officers. I found out about this yesterday.”

She emphasizes her ethical and moral obligations as a prosecutor, which include ensuring that all evidence is presented.

After discovering the concealed evidence, Johnson felt compelled to withdraw before the hearing.

“When the motion hearing began, my position was… we have an obligation as prosecutors, we have an obligation not only to the people, but to the defendant and our obligation is to make sure that all evidence is turned over,” she said.

“We don’t decide what the defense is. Our job is to ensure transparency and to ensure that the accused has all the evidence that the prosecution has gathered. What he does with it is his business.”

Asked if she had any regrets, Johnson said: “Did I think there was inappropriate behavior in the handling of that weapon? Yes, yes.”

Baldwin himself was reportedly moved when the judge finally dismissed the charges.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the actor broke his silence following the charges being dropped.

“There are too many people who have supported me to be able to thank them now,” he wrote Saturday.

“To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness to my family.”

It ends a nearly three-year legal saga following the fatal shooting on the set of the film “Rust” in October 2021.

The film’s armorer, Hannah Guttierez-Reed, had already been convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Charges against Baldwin were initially filed in 2023 but were later dropped, only to be refiled in January 2024.
