Update to Illinois assault weapons ban: Federal judge rules gun law unconstitutional

CHICAGO (WLS) — A federal judge in the state of Illinois on Friday declared the ban on assault weapons unconstitutional.

The judge in the case sided with plaintiffs who argue the ban applies to weapons they say are often used for self-defense purposes.

However, the order is not immediate. The judge gave the state 30 days to file an appeal.

ABC7 has reached out to Governor JB Pritzker’s office and the Illinois Attorney General for comment.
