Gov. Wes Moore vows to protect Maryland’s interests under the Trump administration

Days after the 2024 election, Governor Wes Moore outlined a plan to protect the interests of Marylanders during the incoming Trump administration.

During a Cabinet meeting Friday in Annapolis, Governor Moore reiterated the importance of a peaceful transition of power after Vice President Kamala Harris lost her presidential bid. Gov. Moore outlined guiding principles but provided no details on how to achieve his goals.

“We will vigorously defend the interests of all Marylanders, and we are prepared to push back on this new administration if necessary,” said Governor Moore.

Over the next two and a half months, we will continue to work with the Biden-Harris administration to leave no one behind – and over the next two and a half months, we will ALSO, in a sense, prepare for the incoming Trump-Vance administration. This ensures that once again we cannot leave anyone behind, Governor Moore said.

Gov. Moore did say he believed it was important to find common ground with the Trump administration wherever possible. That sentiment was applauded by Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey, who emphasized the importance of navigating a federal partnership.

“We encourage the Governor and his team to remember that the message hardworking Americans sent to Washington applies in Maryland too – they are struggling and the costs of their daily routines are becoming increasingly difficult to manage,” said Senator Hershey in a statement. “Keeping this at the forefront will be of paramount importance as we continue to grapple with a looming budget deficit. Raising taxes and over-regulation will only stifle our economy and the opportunities available to all Marylanders.”

Harris’ loss was a disappointment to many Marylanders, Governor Moore said; he spent weeks on the campaign trail in swing states, campaigning for Vice President Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

“I know this is an outcome that the majority of Marylanders did not vote for, but I want to be clear: this is the outcome this administration is prepared for,” Governor Moore said.

During his remarks at the top of the Cabinet meeting, Governor Moore reiterated the guiding principles for next year: deliver results for Marylanders, defend constitutional rights, grow the economy and “restore confidence in our public servants, our institutions and our economy.” . democracy.”

Heading into the next budget year with an expected budget crisis, Governor Moore made clear that growing the economy will be critical. Decisions made in Washington will likely impact Maryland, the governor said, especially since Maryland is home to the NIH, NSA, FDA, Ft. Meade and NASA.

“The federal government is our largest employer, and we have approximately 140,000 federal employees in our state,” Governor Moore said. “These Marylanders are essential to our national competitiveness – and they are the foundation of our economy.”
