The US president said the shooter’s motive, his options and affiliations, or whether he received help and support, were not yet known.

These issues are under investigation, he said.

“Tonight, I want to talk about what we know. A former president was shot. An American citizen was killed, simply for exercising his freedom to support the candidate of his choice,” Biden said.

“We cannot, we must not go down this path in America.”

Biden then listed a series of acts of political violence, including the January 6 riot at the Capitol, the attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s wife, the intimidation of election officials and the attempted assassination of Trump, and said: “There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence. Period. No exceptions.”

He added: “We can let this violence become normalized. You know, the political situation in this country has become very tense. It is time to calm things down. We all have a responsibility to do so.”
