Gareth Southgate set to be offered new job as England decision looms

Many question marks remain over Gareth Southgate’s future after failing to win a trophy with England at two consecutive European Championships.

England endured a second mixed Euro final after a 2-1 defeat to Spain in Berlin on Sunday night. After the game, Southgate said he would take a few days to consider his future.

“It’s not the time for me to talk about it,” he told the BBC. “I need to talk to the right people and give myself some time. To get to another final… it was a privilege to have that opportunity. But to fail is tough at the moment.”

However, he is reportedly being offered a punditry role at ITV, with the broadcaster reportedly considering making him a key part of its 2026 World Cup coverage, according to the Daily Mail.

Southgate’s contract with the FA expires in December and while the board is keen for him to stay in charge of the Three Lions, it remains to be seen whether he will extend his deal. The 53-year-old has been criticised during his nine-year tenure despite leading England to back-to-back Euro finals and World Cup semi-finals and quarter-finals.

Southgate is said to have admirers within ITV and officials are keen to bring him onto their panel. However, he is unlikely to be present for the Nations League game against Ireland in September as he would need a break.
