A Michigan professor reportedly offered bonus points for a post-election mourning session

Michigan State University behavioral neuroscience professor Alexa Veenema offered bonus points to students who attended a lecture aimed at trying to “reduce your anxiety” in the aftermath of Election Day, according to images circulating on social media.

An email reportedly written by Veenema acknowledges that students may be experiencing “overwhelming sadness” over the fact that “so many Americans are so utterly naive.” She then invited students to share their feelings in a shortened lecture and offered “bonus points” for attending, the images show.

The email was originally shared by content creator Old Row, who wrote: “THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.”

“This is pure indoctrination,” it added.

Neither Veenema nor Michigan State immediately responded to a request for comment on the email on Friday.

Michigan was one of many swing states that turned red in support of newly elected President Donald Trump. The state elected seven Republicans and six Democrats to the House of Representatives and sent Representative Elissa Slotkin to the Senate.

Ingham County, home to Michigan, voted Democratic in all three key races.

The alleged email comes as employees on campuses across the US are speaking out following the election. A University of Oregon employee said in a social media post this week that he hopes people who voted for Trump jump off a bridge.

“Do something, because you’re fucking stupid,” said Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Leonard Serrato. “And I hope you jump off that bridge.”

Serrato was placed on administrative leave because his post is under investigation, according to the university.

A pediatric cardiologist at University of Iowa Health Care is also facing an internal investigation following a social media post in which he wished a Trump supporter would “lose your child in a school shooting.”

“You already have nothing to lose, you don’t care anyway!” Dr. Mayank Sharma wrote. “Prepare for the funeral of your children.”
