Dodgers fan catches live ball during tense moments in World Series, prompting fan interference

The 2024 World Series has provided plenty of drama to kick off the series.

In the middle of what was already a tense 2-2 draw between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees were called a bizarre game of fan interference during the game.

Gleyber Torres of the Yankees hit a line drive to left-centerfield, probably toward the wall. However, a fan in a gray Dodgers jersey extended his glove and essentially caught a live ball.

The rare and strange play prompted the on-field umpires to keep Torres at second, rather than letting him round all four bases for a home run as the Yankee infielder and his Bronx Bombers teammates had hoped.

Fortunately for the fan, who packed his bag after the controversial play, the inning ultimately proved insignificant for Los Angeles, as no one scored in the ninth inning.

However, other fan interference actions and no-calls in the past have affected the teams involved. One of the most infamous plays was the 1996 “Jeffrey Maier incident,” in which a 12-year-old fan pulled a live ball into the stands from a Baltimore Orioles outfielder, helping the Yankees. The umpires at the game ultimately did not rule this play as fan interference, giving Derek Jeter a home run in that at bat. The Yankees ultimately won that series against the Orioles.

“That was a home run, guys,” Jeter playfully said of the play during the MLB on FOX broadcast in October 2024.
