Six people found dead in Bangkok hotel room from suspected poisoning

Bangkok (Thailand), July 16: Six people were found dead Tuesday in a hotel room in downtown Bangkok, Thailand, and police suspect the people were poisoned, according to the New York Times.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said two of the dead were Vietnamese Americans and four were Vietnamese nationals.

Police Major General Theeradej Thumsuthee, chief investigator of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, who was interviewed on Nation TV, a Thai news channel, said three of the dead were men and three were women, The New York Times reported.

“Based on the preliminary examination of the scene, it was assumed that they had been poisoned,” General Theeradej said.

Theeradej added that there were traces showing that the six people had drunk coffee or tea.

However, a preliminary autopsy revealed no injuries, he said, The New York Times reported.

In addition, a guide was questioned, he said.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengsawang told reporters there was no sign of a struggle.

According to the New York Times, the bodies of the six people were found in the same room, a suite. The six people were due to leave the hotel on Tuesday and had packed their bags.

Mass violence is rare in Bangkok, but the capital was rocked by a shooting last October, when a 14-year-old gunman opened fire in a luxury shopping mall, ultimately killing three people.

The Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel is located at a busy intersection in downtown Bangkok, across from the Erawan Shrine, the scene of a deadly attack that killed 20 people in 2015.
