The View’s Whoopi Goldberg doubts Trump will stick to unifying message after assassination attempt: ‘He’ll lose his mind and it’ll start again’

View continues to ramp up its political coverage, with a segment of this morning’s episode focusing specifically on the various calls to tone down inflammatory rhetoric in politics, particularly in light of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The discussion began with a clip from President Joe Biden’s appearance on NBC News with Lester Holt last night (July 15), in which he clarified his previous language about Trump, particularly his remark that the former POTUS should be placed “on the bullseye.”

Biden said, “It was a mistake to use that word. I didn’t mean ‘crosshairs.’ I meant ‘target.’ I meant focus on him. Focus on what he’s doing. Focus on – on his – on his policies. Focus on how many lies he told in the debate.”

After the broadcast of the excerpt from Biden’s interview on ViewAlyssa Farah Griffin weighed in, applauding Biden for admitting his comments were wrong.

“I think it was important for Biden to acknowledge that that word was something he shouldn’t have used, and I think it’s refreshing when politicians admit they’re wrong about something,” Griffin said.

She added: “It’s something that we ourselves have to reexamine, the way we speak in this environment. We live in a time of political violence, even before the attempted assassination of Trump.”

Later in the same segment, Griffin said that Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday (July 18) would be the perfect time for him to try to bring our polarized nation together. Trump himself said that after Saturday’s (July 13) shooting at his rally, he would craft “a completely different speech” that “will bring the entire country, if not the entire world, together,” according to Axios.

On this morning’s show, Griffin told his co-hosts: “This is an opportunity for the former president to lower the temperature on Thursday and show it in his remarks, if he’s able.”

Sunny Hostin could be heard responding, “I hope he can,” but Goldberg had his doubts.

She said, “Look, that’s what he’s going to do. I don’t know if he’s going to keep doing it. You know, he’s going to start like this. And then he’s going to lose his mind and it’s going to start all over again.”
