Beyonce joins Kamala Harris for a rally on abortion rights

Beyonce told a packed stadium in Texas that it was time for America to elect Kamala Harris as president and urged voters to “sing a new song,” before the vice president delivered a message that Donald Trump was committed to advancing women’s rights run.

“To all the men and women in this room and watching across the country, we need you,” Beyoncé said at the Houston rally.

Accompanied by her mother Tina Knowles and her former bandmate Kelly Rowland, the singer told the cheering crowd that she was not at the rally as a celebrity or politician.

“I’m here as a mother,” Beyonce said, talking about how her children would see “the sacrifices made so that we can witness the strength of a woman… and reimagine what leadership is.”

Mrs. Harris came out to loud cheers. She told the crowd that Trump erased a half-century of hard-fought progress when he appointed the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v Wade and created a health care crisis.

“For anyone watching from out of state, if you think you are protected from Trump’s abortion ban because you live in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New York, California or any other state where voters or lawmakers have protected reproductive freedom, know: no one is protected,” she said.

“Because a national ban from Donald Trump will ban abortion in every state.

“That said, elections are important.”

Ms. Harris listed the effects she sees of various bans, such as “women have fewer options, fewer medical students are choosing to specialize in women’s health.”

Her campaign said it was its largest rally yet, with the crowd waiting for hours and wearing flashing red, white and blue LED bracelets as “confidence women” and “freedom” flashed on large screens between acts.

She was joined at the meeting by women who have nearly died from sepsis and other pregnancy complications because they couldn’t get proper medical care, including women who never intended to end their pregnancies.

With the presidential election deadlocked, Ms. Harris is banking on abortion rights as a key motivator for voters — including Republican women, especially since Mr. Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn the constitutional right .

Trump has been inconsistent in his message to voters on abortion and reproductive rights, though he has said he would veto a national abortion ban.

He has repeatedly changed his position, giving vague, contradictory and sometimes nonsensical answers to questions about an issue that has become a major vulnerability for Republicans in this year’s elections.

Trump was also in Texas on Friday, where he predicted he would break records for the number of people deported from the United States if he wins the election. He recorded a podcast with Joe Rogan.
