Tiger Woods sends clear message about retirement

World Golf Hall of Famer Colin Montgomerie recently questioned whether Tiger Woods was still good enough to compete in professional golf, and Woods was quick to respond.

In a recent interview with Rick Broadbent of the London Times, Colin Montgomerie suggested that he thought it was time for Tiger Woods to retire from professional golf.

“Aren’t we there yet? I would have thought we’d been past that,” Montgomerie said. “There’s a time when all sportspeople have to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously he still feels he can win. We’re more realistic.”

But at a news conference before The Open Championship this week, Woods had a pretty clear message for Montgomerie about his retirement status.

“As a former champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin is not,” Woods said in a video shared by CBS Sports’ Kyle Porter. “He’s not a former champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t have the ability to make that decision. I do.”

Clearly, Woods isn’t ready to give up golf just yet, and he’s not going to let anyone else make that decision for him.
