  • Bayern Munich striker says he is ‘one of the greatest English managers of all time’
  • The FA has confirmed it is already working on appointing the next coach

Harry Kane has posted an emotional farewell message to Gareth Southgate after resigning as England manager.

After eight years in charge of his country, Southgate decided to step down from the role following defeat in the Euro 2024 final.

It was Southgate’s second European Championship final defeat as Spain finished a record fourth.

Kane’s message read: “Boss. Thank you for everything you have done for me and our country! You have been one of the greatest England managers of all time and it has been a pleasure to have been your captain throughout that time.

“You helped our nation connect and believe in our team again. There were so many great moments and we created memories together that will last forever!”

“Good luck with your next chapter and I’m sure we’ll see each other again. Thanks boss!”

It comes after it was revealed that England Under-21s head coach Lee Carsley is in pole position to succeed Southgate as interim manager.

The former Everton player is very likely to lead the Three Lions in their next international against the Republic of Ireland in less than eight weeks, according to The sun.

The FA are expected to replicate Southgate’s appointment in 2016, when he was promoted from Under-21s to England manager – also initially on an interim basis.

FA chiefs have confirmed they are considering appointing a new manager but believe Carsley, 50, is best placed to take over for England’s next game.

It would also appear “highly unlikely” that Manchester United would make a call on Southgate – even if the club were to suffer a disastrous start to the season and part ways with Erik ten Hag.

Kane said in his message: “Thank you for everything you have done for me and our country! You have been one of the greatest England managers of all time and it has been a pleasure to have been your captain throughout that time.”
