Man dies as a result of injuries from shooting involving an Omaha officer

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – One man died Friday as a result of injuries sustained in a An officer-involved shooting happened Thursday.

Omaha police said Friday evening that the man, identified as Rafael Crespo, 37, died at the hospital.

On Friday, OPD says one officer involved in the incident remains to be interviewed and an autopsy of Crespo will be performed. The OPD Officer-Involved Investigations Team continues to investigate the shooting.

More information will come from OPD once these steps are completed.

Crespo and a 36-year-old woman were injured in the incident, Omaha police told 6 News. Thursday morning started as a domestic violence call near South 43rd and Frances Street around 5:30 PM Wednesday.

When they arrived on scene, they heard gunshots and a woman “physically fighting inside the building,” according to an OPD report released Thursday afternoon. “Arriving officers heard gunfire from the inside of a south-facing office and heard a woman screaming from an interior closet. Officers entered the building, found the office and could still hear gunfire coming from the office closet.”

The incident was captured on the officer’s body-worn cameras and cruiser cameras. No officers were injured in the incident, authorities said.

Officers immediately opened the closet door and two of them fired their guns, the report said.

OPD said officers were able to extract the woman and take her to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The man is also in hospital with extremely critical injuries after taking life-saving measures.

“It was determined that the man and woman were once in a domestic relationship,” the OPD release said.

A gun was found near the man in the closet, the report said.

The Nebraska State Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
