Law enforcement prepares for campaign stop on Vice President Harris in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to make a campaign stop in Kalamazoo County on Wednesday. Ahead of her arrival, Sheriff Richard Fuller shared how they’re preparing for her visit.

“We’ve had many events like this before, where either the vice president or the president has come to visit us,” Fuller told FOX 17. “These things are taken very seriously. We always want to ensure the safety of the community as well as the safety of the high-ranking official who is coming.”

He could not specify which law enforcement agencies would be involved Wednesday, but his department is ready.

“It’s all part of a larger process where we involve a lot of people, spending hundreds of hours planning and looking for potential issues or concerns. We try to understand everything in advance,” he said.

Although Harris’ visit comes on the heels of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the sheriff isn’t concerned. “I don’t think there’s any greater concern because of an incident that happened in a completely different part of the country and has nothing to do with our area,” he said.

In the event of an emergency, he asks the public to speak out. “We want people to know that they can alert the authorities if they see something that is out of the normal circumstances of an event like this.”

Fuller added that this will not be a place of violence or a place where anyone will try to make a statement.

“Our thoughts go out to everyone who was involved in this incident, to the people who lost, you know… to the injured. We want people to know that this is not acceptable in our country,” he said of Saturday.

FOX 17 reached out to Michigan State Police about the upcoming visit. They said in an email:

“The Secret Service plans, coordinates, and assigns other law enforcement agencies, such as MSP, as it deems necessary for these types of events. MSP remains ready and committed to working with our federal law enforcement partners whenever our assistance is requested.”

Fuller says safety is the top priority Wednesday and wants to remind people that if they see something, they should report it to law enforcement so they can respond and investigate.
