Analyzing the Browns cornerback room

What we know: The Browns have a solid depth in their cornerback room, starting with veterans like Ward and Newsome, as well as the leap forward Emerson made in his second season with Cleveland. Cornerbacks played a vital role in the Browns’ defense’s success throughout the 2023 season — Emerson led the team with four interceptions and tied Newsome for the team lead with 14 pass deflections, while Ward recorded 11 pass deflections and two interceptions.

They also added depth in free agency, bringing in Brown and Hardee who can play different roles for their secondary and special teams. Brown was a key contributor on the Colts’ special teams in 2022 and 2023, while Hardee has played a significant role in kick and punt return coverage during his career.

As a collective defense and specifically in the secondary, the Browns look to build on their success in the 2023 season and have one of the best defenses in the NFL.

The biggest question: What will Harden’s role be among the other cornerbacks in the room? The Browns selected Harden in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he’ll have to prove his place as a rookie in the cornerback room.

When Harden was at South Dakota, he found ways to contribute in each of his four seasons. He led the team in pass breakups in 2023 and started all 13 games, while in 2022 he led his team with three interceptions and four forced fumbles.

However, with the depth in the room, Harden will have to work to show what he can bring to the defensive secondary and contribute to the unit. During rookie minicamp and the offseason program, Harden took charge of returning reps, which allowed him to carve out a role on special teams.
