Rockford University celebrates first-generation college students

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Being a first-generation college student is a major achievement for many and Rockford University is doing its part to support that community.

On Friday, November 8, Rockford University’s First Gen Forward Club, in partnership with the university’s Regents First program, held a special dinner in honor of National First-Generation College Celebration Day.

The event included professional headshots, musical performances and a keynote speech from RU alumna, Board of Trustees member and first-generation college graduate Mary Ann Laudicina. She also participated in a first-generation panel discussion at the event.

Mya Barret, president of Rockford University’s First Gen Forward club, says the resources Rockford University provided helped her get where she is today.

“It really helped me come out of my shell and put myself into different types of work, whether it’s internships. Stepping out of my comfort zone and speaking at events like this. It’s really helpful,” Barret said.

Barret spoke during dinner Friday evening. The celebration took place on the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The act helped create programs and funding for millions of first-generation college students through things like the Pell Grant, work-study programs and Stafford loans.

“First-generation college students are among the most resilient, creative and resourceful individuals in our society and we believe it is important that we recognize that,” said Karen Walker, Dean of Student Support Programming at Rockford University.
