Actress Nika King shares the personal connection that drew her to SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT.

“I’m so happy to be able to be a part of a faith-based film and have this real connection with God,” King told Faithwire. “Because it just makes the project more powerful and it strengthens my purpose in what God has called me to do.”

The actress said that after her maternal grandmother was murdered, her mother was placed in foster care, along with her three brothers. All four were later adopted by a pastor and his wife.

“It was all about the ups and downs of trauma, abandonment, and kind of making do,” King said. “As an actor, you’re always looking for projects that, to me, tell a story, that amplify the light. So I was immediately drawn to the script.”

She also spoke about her encounter with the Holy Spirit on the set of the project.

“It was so captivating because there were moments and scenes where the Spirit was in the room, and they were yelling, ‘Cut!’ and I was like, ‘You can’t cut with that!’” she shared. “It’s the Spirit of God at work, not just in our performances, in our words, in our thoughts and in our messages, because this movie is really supposed to address this problem that we have in this country, with 400,000 kids in foster care.”

The king continued: “This is a movement for God.”

In an interview with Belief Net, the actress said, “Let me tell you, (First Lady Donna Martin) has given me a new life and a new purpose. She probably doesn’t know what she’s doing in my life and what God is doing in my life by representing her. It’s definitely taking me on a completely different trajectory than what I thought my life would be.”

Movieguide®’s review for SOUND OF HOPE says:

SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT tells a touching story. Donna Martin is grieving after the unexpected death of her mother. However, when God tells her to foster a child, she finds a new purpose in her life. Her husband is the town pastor and also feels called to foster children. So he begins preaching about fostering the poor. The whole town decides to foster children. Donna decides to foster a very troubled teenager named Terri. The family wonders if they will be able to show Terri God’s love while keeping their family together.

SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT is a beautiful story about an entire town that takes in foster children. As such, it has a strong and morally uplifting Christian worldview. However, the film does touch on some of the realities and struggles that foster families and foster children face. MOVIEGUIDE® therefore advises caution for children and families. However, SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT shows that God’s love is real and that no matter what your past, God will always be with you.
