Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns Britons about ‘high threat’ in European country | Travel News | Trip

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has sounded the alarm for Brits traveling to Belgium with a new update. On Thursday, the FCDO highlighted critical safety and security concerns, warning travelers of the increased risk of terrorism in the country.

The statement emphasized: “There is a major threat of a terrorist attack affecting the interests of the United Kingdom and British citizens globally, including from groups and individuals who view the United Kingdom and British citizens as targets. Always remain aware of your surroundings.”

It also directed UK citizens to resources provided by UK Counter Terrorism Policing, advising: “UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on how to stay safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce the risk of terrorism while abroad.”

Focusing specifically on Belgium, the FCDO warned: “Terrorists are likely to attempt to carry out attacks in Belgium. Attacks may be indiscriminate, including in locations visited by foreigners, such as:

  • public transport
  • national and international transport hubs
  • musical, sporting and cultural events
  • government buildings and international institutions
  • places of worship and religious sites

” The guidance continued with a call for vigilance: “You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities. There have been some high-profile terrorist attacks across Belgium. The main threat comes from extremists linked to Daesh (formerly known as ISIL). Previous incidents have included fatal attacks against civilians and authorities:

  • On October 16, 2023, two people were killed and one was seriously injured in a terrorist-related shooting in Brussels
  • in 2022, a police officer was killed and another was injured in an alleged terrorist incident in Brussels

“Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted several attack plans, carrying out a series of arrests in recent years. The Belgian government has set the national threat level at 3 – ‘Severe’. An increase in police presence and security measures can be expected Additional charges may be in place. Please be aware of your surroundings and follow advice from local authorities.”

It also warned about ongoing protests and strikes, especially in major cities and around the Schuman area (EU neighborhood) in Brussels. It noted that although most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence.

The FCDO further warned: “There has also been violence following major sporting events. Farmer demonstrations may block main roads and delay traffic. Demonstrations in the Schuman area may affect access to the British Embassy and the British Consulate General.

“Strikes are an ongoing problem that can cause serious travel disruption across the country and affect international travel. Strikes may be announced at short notice and planned strikes may be prolonged at short notice. Strikes may coincide with demonstrations and protests.

“For regular updates on any disruptions, check local news and follow the advice given by your travel provider. If you are in areas where large gatherings occur, remain vigilant and move away quickly if there are signs of disorder. Avoid protests, wait delays on some main roads and follow the advice of the authorities.”
