NITES criticizes HCL Technologies for its new leave policy

IT workers’ union NITES has criticised HCL Technologies for its new policy that ties employees’ leave to office attendance, calling it “unfair”, and asked the tech giant to reconsider its stance. HCLTech declined to comment.

According to NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja, the policy requires employees to work in the office at least three days a week and at least 12 days a month to be eligible for leave. Saluja argues that the policy not only undermines a healthy work-life balance but also violates Indian labour laws, particularly the Shops and Establishments Act, which requires consultation with employees for any changes in the leave policy.

NITES stressed that in the post-pandemic era, flexible work arrangements are the norm and rigid requirements like these are a step backward. The union urged HCL Technologies to reconsider its policy and prioritise employee welfare.
