Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Can’t Help Breaking Their Paladin Oaths

Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Can’t Help Breaking Their Paladin Oaths

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players many ways to play, with the Paladin class being arguably one of the most difficult to maintain. So much so that many who play as this type of character have had a very difficult time keeping their oaths.

In a Reddit post, a player recounted how he broke his oath simply by siding with Lae’zel and fighting Tieflings during her recruitment section.

Many others were quick to share their own tales of woe, with some breaking their paladin oaths less than an hour into the game. One said, “Yeah, the game doesn’t really care how evil the character you kill is; it’ll still break the oath. Killing Kagha can break your oath, and she works with the shadow druids and has no problem killing children for stealing.”

“The trick is to bait them into attacking you with dialogue or have another party member attack them. This counts as “self-defense” in this case, even if you bait them into fighting you.”

Another added: “Until I killed Cazador during my Oath of the Ancients by releasing the spawn into the Underdark, it broke. Which was random for me and unexpected. Then I accidentally broke it again while fighting some Bhaal cultists, and a flaming fist rushed towards me and assaulted me as well, and I killed them.”

A third shared the story of his friend’s first foray into the class game, saying, “I introduced BG3 to my buddy, and he picked a paladin and wanted to kill the Tieflings that grabbed Lae’zel and was extremely upset when he found out he broke his oath. I had another buddy who killed half the grove, without managing to break his oath in any way.”

It’s worth noting that Baldur’s Gate 3’s handling of paladin oaths is considerably stricter than tabletop D&D. Additionally, Vengeance is considerably less strict and actively encourages the player to take more nefarious directions, which is worth considering if you’re looking to play the class for the first time.
