Phil Mickelson took to social media to congratulate Xander Schauffele on his thrilling victory at The Open Championship.

On Sunday, Schauffele shot a flawless 65 in the final round at Royal Troon en route to his second major of the year, narrowly edging out Justin Rose and Billy Horschel for the Claret Jug. He joins Jack Nicklaus as the only two players to win multiple major championships by shooting final rounds of 65 or less.

Shortly after Schauffele was crowned Golf Champion of the Year, Mickelson took to social media with a classy message for his fellow American. He wrote on X: “What an incredible performance by @XSchauffele. A final round 65 at -4 on the tough back 9 to win the Open and become CGOTY is simply incredible. Congratulations, what a year, keep it up in Paris too!”

Rose, who finished the week tied for second with Horschel, also praised Schauffele for his strong performance. “Congratulations Xander… A two-time major champion and he deserves it,” he wrote.

“I felt like I held my ground and gave it my all today and all week. I left the 18th hole after every round feeling like I got something out of the day. Thank you for your support. It means a lot!! The pitcher dream is still alive!”

Speaking to reporters with the Claret Jug at his side, Schauffele partly credited Mickelson with helping him become an Open champion. The 30-year-old revealed he watched highlights of the LIV Golf star’s epic clash with Henrik Stenson at the 2016 Open to get himself in the right frame of mind.
