NEET 2024 LIVE: Pleas seeking cancellation of the National Eligibility Test and NEET UG entrance test will be heard by the Supreme Court of India today. The SC hearing on a batch of pleas ranging from cancellation of the exam to discrepancies and alleged leak of documents will begin at 10:30 am. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear all the NEET matters with an aim to conclude the same by noon. On July 18, the SC directed the National Testing Agency, NTA, to release the centre-wise and city-wise results of all NEET UG candidates by Saturday. Subsequently, the NTA released the centre-wise and city-wise NEET 2024 result.

Students approached the Supreme Court after the NEET 2024 result was declared on June 4. The result, which was announced ten days before the scheduled date, soon became marred by controversy as many people raised the issue of a large number of students scoring the maximum marks of 720 out of 720. Many students were also allegedly given grace marks, which was not accepted by the larger student population. As a result, the grace marks were withdrawn and a retest was ordered and conducted for 1,563 candidates. The results for the same were also announced. Students and parents, however, argued that the discrepancies and questions were too many to ignore.

So far, in the previous hearings, the Supreme Court has admitted that the NEET UG paper was indeed leaked in Bihar. The decision on whether to cancel the NEET exam is, however, under dispute as the extent of the paper leak is being assessed. IIT Madras was also asked to submit a data analysis to determine whether the NEET results showed any massive malpractice. The report submitted ruled out any massive malpractice. The petitioners, however, challenged the veracity of the report, questioning the “possible” bias of IIT Madras since the director is a member of the NTA Government Council.

Meanwhile, the NTA has maintained that the leak of documents was contained and the result was as per expected parameters. Also, with the retest and removal of grace marks, the scores have been levelled. The higher cut-offs for NEET UG results this year have been attributed to the reduced syllabus of the undergraduate medical and dental entrance exams.

The Supreme Court has maintained that cancellation of the NEET UG exam will be ordered only if it is found that the leakage of documents was indeed widespread. In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had considered the arguments of the petitioners and directed the NTA to release more detailed results. The court will resume hearing today. The CJI had sought conclusive evidence and had conveyed his intention to conclude the proceedings today.
