Why are Delta passengers still experiencing delays and cancellations?

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — WPTV is trying to learn more about an investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Transportation into Delta Airlines.

In a message posted on X, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigeg said the agency holds Delta accountable for the problems that arose following the CrowdStrike crash on Friday.

WPTV’s Michael Hoffman explains why Delta and what you can do to protect your travel plans.

Delta Airlines travelers continue to experience cancellations, delays and long lines.

“It’s a nightmare,” said Delta passenger Janis Sessions.

Sessions is trying to get to a pool tournament in Alabama. She flew from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale and had three cancellations. Now she’s changing airports.

“I had to cancel all that and I had to drive to West Palm Beach just to catch my flight,” Sessions said.

She is not alone. Mary Allen bought a non-refundable ticket.

“So if I miss my connecting flight because of a delay, they won’t refund me,” Allen said.

But what resources are you entitled to as a traveler?

According to the Department of Transportation, passengers are entitled to a refund if they have significantly delayed the return of their baggage and canceled or significantly changed their flights. With non-refundable tickets, in some cases, a cancellation fee is charged and the remainder is refunded as a flight credit.

Buttigeg said the U.S. Department of Transportation “has opened an investigation into Delta Air Lines” to ensure they are “taking care of their customers.”

But why is Delta having more problems?

According to its website, “half of Delta’s computer systems worldwide are Windows-based,” adding that their workforce planning system also used Windows.

But after days of problems, travelers like Janis say they are at the end of their rope.

“If this flight is canceled, I’ll go home. I’ll just say forget it,” Sessions said.
