Kyle Shanahan reveals details of 49ers’ job offer to Bill Belichick

Last March, various reports reported that the San Francisco 49ers had reached out to Bill Belichick, and may have even gone so far as to offer the former New England Patriots coach a position within the organization.

On Tuesday, as training camp begins this week, Kyle Shanahan spoke with Tim Kawakami about The TK Show and discussed Belichick, detailing whether or not the team had considered hiring him in any capacity.

Shanahan expressed surprise that Belichick went through the head coaching cycle without finding a new job. He even revealed that he offered the legendary coach any role he wanted in San Francisco, except, of course, the head coaching job.

“I offered him a job as a coach with the Niners,” Shanahan said of Belichick’s potential addition to the Niners coaching staff. “He loves the game so much that you never know. I can’t believe he’s not the head coach of a team right now. I know what I would do if I was the owner … I offered him anything he wanted to do.”

“He politely declined,” he added, while expressing confidence that Belichick would be back in the NFL soon.

Belichick had been the Patriots’ coach since 2000, but the two sides parted ways after the 2023 campaign, with Jerod Mayo taking over in New England.

Belichick had been linked to various coaching jobs throughout the NFL cycle but ultimately found himself without a job after teams chose different candidates. Shanahan made it clear how much of a shock it was to him, even if his efforts to poach the 72-year-old for his own staff ultimately proved futile.
