The Joburg prosecutor wants an investigation into Gwamanda’s tenure as mayor, MMC

This follows Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero’s removal of Gwamanda as MMC on Saturday.

Gwamanda was placed on special leave following his recent arrest on fraud charges.

He allegedly carried out a funeral policy fraud through his company, iThemba Lama Africa, selling policies to residents of Soweto in 2011. However, residents said they could not find the company office to claim their payouts.

Joburg DA caucus leader Belinda Kayser Echeozonjoku believes Gwamanda’s removal is not enough.

She says an investigation is needed “to assess the damage he may have caused as both mayor and MMC”.

“We also demanded a full forensic investigation into the signatures received by Cllr Gwamanda and Executive Mayor Dada Morero regarding the renaming of Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive. It is clear that they cannot be trusted,” Echeozonjoku said.

At the same time, DA Echeozonjoku said it is not happy with the appointment of Tebeho Nkoukou of the Patriotic Alliance as the new Community Development MMC.

“Councilor Nkoukou is known for his racist statements in the council, in a country as diverse as ours. We must warn him that a portfolio like Community Development considers social cohesion as one of its mandates,” Echeozonjoku said, adding that the DA expects that the forensic audit of the signatures delivered to the mayor and former MMC in support of the renaming of Sandton Drive is made public. .
