ARTcade game trailer gets mixed response from horror fans

It’s a good day for fans of extreme horror films and a very bad day for gamers with coulrophobia: we just learned that Art the Clown from the “Terrifier” franchise is getting his own video game. “Terrifier: The ARTcade Game” is being developed by Relevo and published by Selecta Play. The developers have not yet announced a definitive release date, but the game is scheduled to arrive on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025. The “Terrifier” franchise has steadily grown in popularity since launch. The first film was released in 2016, but this retro-inspired beat-em-up is Art’s first solo foray into gaming (following his seasonal appearance as a “Call of Duty” skin).

Announcement

However, players and “Terrifier” fans are a bit confused by this announcement. The news coincides nicely with this week’s release of “Terrifier 3,” but “The ARTcade Game” still seems to have come out of nowhere. The minute-long trailer doesn’t give us much to go on, but while some fans are quite excited about what they’re seeing, others would rather see Art star in a legitimately excellent horror game.

Some people aren’t sure how to feel about the game Terrifier

Gamers are posting some interesting footage in response to the game’s “Terrifier” trailer, with some of them making it clear that this isn’t how they imagined it. “Put him in ‘Dead By Daylight’ already,” wrote one commenter. “Dead by Daylight” had good and bad interpretations of established characters, but it’s hard to argue against Art being a perfect addition to this game. Other fans are pointing out that “The ARTcade Game” looks a lot like another film adaptation that gamers fell in love with a long time ago.

Announcement

Noting the similarities between the style of the game “Terrifier” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” (inspired by the arcade classic “River City Ransom”), you can’t miss them. This might not be a bad thing, however. “Scott Pilgrim” is fondly remembered, and while the “Terrifier” franchise makes less sense as a beat-em-up, we wouldn’t mind it taking a few cues from another beloved game.

Announcement

We may not understand the motivation behind this particular adaptation just yet, but die-hard “Terrifier” fans are very excited to see their favorite killer clown appear in any type of video game. We’ll just have to wait and see how the game turns out. If it’s anything like the films that inspired it, “The ARTcade Game” could have surprisingly strong staying power.
