Emir Sanusi condemns violent hunger protests, calls for calm

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, on Friday expressed dismay over the nationwide anti-hunger protest that degenerated into violence in Kano State, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property valued at billions of naira.

The first-class monarch described the incident as “sad and pathetic” and a setback to the socio-economic development of the state.

Addressing the press at his palace, Sanusi, who is the 14th Emir of Kano, regretted that the protest was hijacked by miscreants and agents of destruction, leading to chaos and destruction of properties belonging to the people of the state.

He stressed that the funds that would be used to repair damaged property could have been invested in poverty reduction, education and nutrition.

The Emir also lamented the destruction of the Digital Excellence Centre, built by the Nigerian Communications Commission, which was supposed to provide digital training and education to the youth.

While calling on the people of Kano to refrain from further violence, Sanusi urged parents, community leaders, imams and district heads to sensitize and educate their communities on the negative consequences of such actions.

He stressed the need for collective responsibility, to prevent similar incidents in the future and promote development in Kano.
