Vice President Phil Gordon’s National Security Advisor’s Meeting with Western Hemisphere Ambassadors on Venezuela

Today at the White House, Vice Presidential National Security Advisor Phil Gordon hosted diplomatic representatives from Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay to discuss political developments in Venezuela. Daniel Erikson, the National Security Council’s senior director for the Western Hemisphere, and Mark Wells, acting assistant secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, participated in the meeting.

Dr. Gordon expressed U.S. solidarity with the courageous and brave people of Venezuela for their participation in the July 28 presidential election despite significant challenges.

Dr. Gordon emphasized that Vice President Harris stands with the Venezuelan people and believes that the will of the Venezuelan people must be respected. He emphasized the Vice President’s commitment to working with the international community to restore democratic norms in Venezuela. He also expressed the Vice President’s opposition to any political repression and violence.

Dr. Gordon reiterated the Biden-Harris administration’s view that Edmundo González Urrutia was the one who won the most votes in the presidential election.

He also praised the countries that voted in favor of the Organization of American States resolution to reach an agreement on opening an impartial investigation into the recent elections in Venezuela two days ago.

Dr. Gordon stressed that now is the time for the Venezuelan parties to begin discussions on a respectful and peaceful transition, in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people.
