Ind. Police officer seriously injured

HAMMOND, IN – A Hammond police officer was transported to a local hospital in serious condition Friday evening after his police cruiser was struck by a passenger car.

At about 7:45 p.m., the officer was driving west on 169th Street when a vehicle traveling south on Southeastern Avenue collided with the police car, officials said.

Hammond police said the vehicle, which was carrying two female passengers, ran a red light. Their conditions are currently unknown.

The officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

“We are actively investigating this incident and will release further updates as more information becomes available,” Hammond police said.
