Suga Apologizes for Driving Scooter Under the Influence of Alcohol

Suga of K-pop boy band BTS has apologized after being fined for driving an electric scooter while intoxicated.

On social media, the 31-year-old said he was “very sad and sorry” to bring his fans “disappointing news”.

In the message, the rapper explains that he “violated traffic laws” when he returned home to Seoul “thinking it was a short distance” and “(forgot) that you should not use an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol.”

“I fell while parking the electric scooter in front of my house, and there was a police officer nearby,” he wrote.

“I took a breathalyzer test, then my license was revoked and I was fined.”

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that police said his blood alcohol level was 0.08 percent.

He added: “Although no one was injured and no property was damaged, this is entirely my responsibility, without any excuse.

“I apologize to those who were hurt by my recklessness and wrongful behavior, and I will ensure that this does not happen again in the future.”

The phenomenally successful boy band is currently on hiatus while its members complete their military service.

Suga started his service last year and works as a social services officer after being declared unfit for regular combat service.

Local media reported that the star’s alternate service was likely related to shoulder surgery he required in 2020.

BTS’s record label, Bighit, also apologized for the scooter incident.

“We express our sincere apologies for the incident involving BTS member Suga and his electric skateboard accident,” they said in a statement.

“We apologize for the disappointment caused by the artist’s inappropriate behavior.

“As a social services officer during his military service, he is prepared to accept all disciplinary measures from his workplace for causing social unrest.

“We will ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.”
