Tuskegee University shooting: 12 people shot, 18-year-old killed in shooting at Tuskegee University homecoming in Alabama; 1 arrested

One person was killed and several others, including students, were injured when a barrage of gunfire erupted early Sunday on the campus of Tuskegee University in Alabama for the school’s centennial homecoming festivities, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 1:40 a.m. on the Macon County campus as homecoming activities, including a Saturday afternoon football game between Tuskegee and Miles College in Alabama, were winding down, officials said.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation, 16 people were injured, 12 of whom were shot.

An 18-year-old died at the scene.

One man has been arrested and charged with possession of a machine gun in connection with the shooting, authorities said in an update Sunday afternoon.

Multiple shooters were suspected to be involved, according to Broadcastify reports. Officials have not confirmed this.

“There will be two shooters right now, maybe more,” an officer said in a radio call, according to Broadcastify broadcasts.

The campus shooting resulted in “the death of a non-university individual,” the university said in a statement released early Sunday.

“The parents of this individual have been notified,” the statement said. “Several others, including Tuskegee University students, were injured and are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”

Several videos posted to social media captured what appeared to be numerous gunshots fired and left people ducking to the ground or taking cover in vehicles.

At the request of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, special agents from ALEA’s Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting and working to identify suspects.

“Special agents are still gathering and investigating information regarding the sequence of events that ultimately led to the shooting. The scene has now been secured by various law enforcement agencies. No arrests have been made at this time,” ALEA said. said.

University officials added: “The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
